Key Learning Outcomes           

At the end of the course, participants would be able to:

  • Apply the Fire Engineering knowledge in the underwriting of risks, evaluate Fire Fighting drawings whether it complies with the current occupancy (may have changed with time).
  • How the underwriting principles and insurance survey are linked to fire Engineering design.
  • Good appreciation of the various types of passive and active protection systems which are to control the fire spread. The various types of clean agents to protect computer room.
  • Able to carry out a pre - calculated sprinkler design with reference to MIS 1910:2006 Fixed Fire Fighting Drawings of insured.
  • Able to plot a hydraulic gradient of yard hydrants ring main and to determine the flow using plot tube.
  • Conduct property survey and detect shortcomings in the fire protection systems.
  • Offer risk improvement recommendations to the insured in accordance to established standards or best industrial practices.

 

Key Course Contents

  • Fundamental of Underwriting principles and the essence of a survey report when evaluating a risk.
  • The principles of combustion, explosion (gas, vapour clouds and dusts), the probable heat sources that start the fire.
  • The operating principles of all fire detectors namely smoke, heat, flame, gases, pressure.
  • All the various Passive protection systems expected in a building.
  • All the various Active protection systems, the design standard and the design itself. It would cover pump sizing, pre - calculated sprinkler design, hydraulically design sprinkler design.
  • Clean agents used in electrical/control room which is environmentally friendly in terms of Ozone Depleting Property (ODP) and Global Warming Potentials (GWP).
  • Fundamental of fluid laws which are applied to determine how the yard hydrant ring main is performing after many years of installation (usually underground). Property survey checklist and rating sheet to determine risk quality and list of likely recommendations on shortcomings discovered.
